Fluoroscopy

Arthrogram

An arthrogram is a test using x-ray and a contrast material (such as a dye, water, air, or a combination of these) to take pictures of a joint. Following the use of a local anesthetic, contrast material and/or air is injected into the joint space and several x-rays are taken.

Barium Enema

Barium enema is a special x-ray of the large intestine, which includes the colon and rectum. Before x-rays are taken, a liquid called barium sulfate is placed in the rectum. Several films are then obtained.

Esophagram (barium swallow)

The esophagram or barium swallow is a test whereby a patient is instructed to drink a barium sulfate compound that enables the radiologist to study the function and appearance of the esophagus and assess the swallowing process.

Cystogram

This is a study of the bladder and urethra. A catheter is placed into the bladder and contrast material is instilled until the bladder is full. The technologist then takes several films including one while the patient is emptying his/her bladder.

Hysterosalpingogram

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an x-ray test that looks at the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes and the area around them. During a hysterosalpingogram, a dye is put through a thin tube that is put through the vagina and into the uterus. Because the uterus and the fallopian tubes are hooked together, the dye will flow into the fallopian tubes. Pictures are taken using a steady beam of x-ray as the dye passes through the uterus and fallopian tubes.

IVP-Intravenous Pyelogram

An IVP is an examination which shows the urinary tract from the kidneys to the bladder.

Small Bowel Series

This is a study to evaluate the small intestine. It can be performed on its own or after an upper gastrointestinal series. Barium is taken orally, then a series of X-rays are taken as barium flows from the stomach through the small intestine, to the colon.

UGI-Upper Gastrointestinal Series

This is a study of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. After drinking barium, the radiologist observes a fluoroscope while placing the patient in a variety of positions. Films are obtained during and after fluoroscopy.
