Hospital Highlights
- As the first Planetree-affiliate hospital in Washington, Highline
Medical Center is dedicated to cultivating a healing, pleasant, caring
and nurturing environment.
- As the tenth busiest emergency department in the Puget Sound Area,
Highline Medical Center serves as the base station for the Burien area
emergency medical unit.
- Comprehensive accredited Cancer Care Program, including the chemotherapy
clinic, radiation therapy through Swedish Cancer Institute, inpatient
care and multiple support programs and supportive therapies in collaboration
with Bastyr University and NW Natural Health Specialty Care Clinic.
- 32-bed intensive care unit, which includes Cardiac Care and Telemetry.
- Our Healing Garden offers a peaceful setting for patients, their families
and visitors.
- In 2001, Highline Medical Center was named one of the nation’s
top 15 “Hospitals With Heart” by Modern Maturity Magazine.
- Opened new Cancer Center May 2005.
History
1958 — Hospital opens as Burien General
Hospital.
1978 — Name changes to Highline Community
Hospital to reflect new status as a community, non-profit hospital.
1985 — Hospital adds a five-story
addition currently housing the Barney Clark Special Care Unit, medical,
surgical, pediatric and oncology units.
1989 — Highline purchases Riverton
General Hospital (now known as the Specialty Center).
1993 — Highline Medical Services Organization
(HMSO) formed as a partnership of the medical staff and the hospital to
position our community to successfully meet the challenges of managed
care.
1998 — Hospital adds new wing with
over 97,000 square feet, which features a state-of-the-art Family Childbirth
Center, Medical/Oncology Unit, community health education center and an
exercise facility for cardiac rehabilitation patients.
2005 — Changed name to Highline Medical Center to better reflect quality and scope of services.
